Inspiration Competition

Guess the baby animals – have a list of animals eg, sheep, cow, goat, lion (plus some more obscure ones!) They name the baby (lamb, calf, kid, cub)
Hanging washing on the line- a competition between teams to do it fastest
Peeling spuds – each person peels one then hands it on to next in line.
Egg cup & tongs –
Nail, screw & staple –
Guess what animal is in the sock –
Use farm related prizes- Freddie frog chocolates, cheese slices, yoghurt/apricot chunks, Craft: Rally members brought along a jar and lid and we made Sand Art Brownies by layering the ingredients carefully in the jar trying not to shake or tip it. A fancy lid and recipe was then tied on, completing a nice gift. You only have to add eggs and oil then bake. ‘Dolmio’ jars were most suitable. Mrs Joy Wallace was our speaker and came suitable dressed in her overalls and completed the ‘farm flavour’ by having a farm quiz and then speaking on the Sower & the Seeds.
Farmyard supper completed the evening, with pink piggies (cherrios with pipe cleaner tails and eyes) round a trough of tomato sauce, pikelet pansies (using coloured cream), animal biscuits, crackers & cheese, cow patties (chocolate crackles with green food colouring) silage slice (alias choc brownie), savoury egg, and fruit kebabs with pineapple lumps, milk bottle lollies, pineapple pieces, grapes, kiwifruit, & mandarin. These were all laid out on a bed of green (grass) coconut.Extreme ExploitsThe Waikato District Executive organized a Special Combined Day Out for all Rallies. It was based on ‘BADGEWORK’.  All members were divided into teams and they rotated around all activities. There was a set number of minutes at each ‘badge’, and the team was required to work together to earn as many points as they could.  Around 180 Rally members plus Leaders had a great day in the sunshine. A BBQ lunch was provided for everyone, caps with the Waikato logo were given to all members and each person received a badge with ‘Extreme Exploits’ on it, to remember the day by.
Following are the ideas that were enjoyed, with suggested instructions if you want to use this for your Rally or District. Every team had about 7 minutes at each activity. They all had to help and work as a team to complete the activities. Please note – these activities are not necessarily what you have to do to earn the badge – they were just based on the general idea of the badge.
Art: Have a large card for each team, also paint & paintbrushes. They had to paint a picture, choosing from the list provided. ( rowing on Lake Karapiro, boating on Lake Taupo, Auckland Harbour Bridge….) Some drew the outlines while others began the painting.Motoring: Park a car beside activity. Set out 4 tyres, bucket with water & rags, plus safety gear for a car (jump leads, can of CRC, first aid kit, tyre pressure gauge, jack….) the team had to place the tyres beside each wheel, wash car windows and clean dashboard, identify each piece of equipment and state what it is used for.
Florist: Lay out a large trailer cover for teams to work on. (Saves a big mess to clean up later!) Provide a selection of ferns, flax, stones, toitoi, shells, flowers & foliage. Each team had to create their team name using the natural products, and making it as artistic as possible.
Computing: A list was given to each team of ‘text language’. They had to match the ‘txt’ with the meaning. Eg. thx = thanks, hand = have a nice day, gtg = got to go, ez = easy, 4e = forever, pls = please…..
They also had to list places that computers could be purchased – Heathcotes, Dick Smith….
Chef: A). Set out a selection of food items. Teams have to discuss and then list them in the order of which contains the most sugar per 100 grams.  (golden syrup, sugar, jelly, ice-cream, condensed milk, muesli bar, tin pears, freshup juice, cruskits, honey, spaghetti, tuna, oats, tin beetroot, peanut butter…)
B). Set out the ingredients needed for a chocolate cake. Have copies of the recipe printed but with the ingredients missing. Eg. Beat _ and _ together. Add _ . Mix well and then sift _ _ and _ together etc. The team had to decide the order in which the ingredients are used and write them in the spaces.
Canoeing: We had a kayak, safety vest and paddle. The team has to choose 1 Rally member to sit in kayak/canoe, they put safety vest on and carry the paddle. Then the rest of the team carries the canoe, with member sitting in it, around a marker and back to the start. They continue to do this, changing the person in the canoe each time.
Farming: Provide fence standards and electric fence reel, also 2 buckets, 1 small cup per person  and some maize feed. The team had to set up an ‘electric fence’ in a 3 sided shape. Also they had to empty the maize feed from 1 bucket to the other using the cups (1 cup each).
Creative: A selection of beautiful calendar pictures (of famous NZ places)were pasted to a large board. Teams had to identify the places.
Sport: We provided dumbbells, skipping ropes, and a punching bag. We divided the team into 3, and had some skipping (10 skips then give to next person), others lifting dumbbells (20 lifts then swap)and the others punching the bag ( 20 punches). After 2 minutes they swap activity.
Ambulance: Have a stretcher and bandages. Line team  up. First 5 people – 1 on stretcher, 1 bandages knee, 1 bandages head, 2 carry stretcher around marker and back. Then next 5 people have a turn etc.
Carpentry: Set out lengths of wood, saw, nails & hammers. Also a level and square. Team  makes a square shape from 4 pieces of wood. Also set out various tools used in carpentry. Others have to identify them correctly. Eg. plane, screws, bolts, sander, level…..Team Leaders & Seconds GuideUse this idea to make a "Team Leaders Guide” to give to the leaders of the teams. This is a wonderful way to make the Team leaders & seconds feel special, honoured and give them responsibility. You can add to, change or delete some parts of it to make it more suitable to your Rally. You can print it as an A4 page folded in the centre then put your Rally name and Rally logo on the front cover. Use paper or card. This is an adaption of the Senior National Camp idea – to be used on a Rally night.Change or create your own activities so they are more suitable to your needs.
1. Build a bridge – Using mini marshmallows and raw spaghetti, build a bridge strong enough to hold a tennis ball. The bridge must be at least 5cm in the air. 2. Puzzle – Cut a large card (per team) into approximately 7 pieces with straight edges. They put the pieces of puzzle together to remake a rectangle.
3. Giants feet – 3 people from the team have to ‘walk’ the giants feet across the line. (giants feet are 3
pairs of gumboots or pieces of tyre tube attached to planks.)
4. Team Races – Each person in the team has to be involved in at least one activity.
• egg & spoon – without dropping it, run around marker

4-legged race – 3 people around marker and back
• Sack – jump around marker and back. • Balloon run – jump or hobble around marker and back with balloon between knees.
• Quoits – throw quoits until you get 1 quoit over post 5. Story Word Search – we wrote out a story, leaving gaps for obvious words – then also had a word-finder
search grid with those words in. They had to find the word, circle it in the grid and write it in the gap.
6. Crossing the River– Each team is given a number of pieces of card (1 less than team members). They have to cross a given stretch of ground, standing only on the pieces of card. Card has to be moved from last person down the team to front person, who places it on ground, steps on it and team all move further along, then repeat. Aim is to move faster than others.
7. Pyramids – make a pyramid from team members, kneeling on ground and on top of each other. Have leader verseeing for safety. If you have 6 in a team you could have 3 kneeling, then 2 on top of them and 1 on top again. If 8 in team it might be 4 on ground, 3 on top of them and 1 on top again.
8. Milk Pool – Have a paddling pool filled with milky water (so you can’t see the bottom). 9.Add marbles, then use feet to search for and pick up WITH TOES,
10 marbles for your team. Add ice cubes to confuse them!
Pointers: Each team will need to start on the same activity (eg. No 1 in this sample)
You will need 1 for each team of the puzzle, team races equipment, story word search (or your choice of activities) and enough marbles for a few teams if they arrive together. But for the others it is first arrived have a go, then the other teams have to wait their turn in order of arrival. They still have opportunities to catch up at the next activity. It is not always the first there that is first completed. Do finish with activities that all teams can do at the same time.Junior Survivor nightWith all the emphasis on safety etc, how do you run a survivor night for 28 junior girls aged 8 – 12 years, while staying at church and only having limited time!Well – we made fires in the car park, pitched a tent on the front lawn and practiced knots on each other.
.
.Splitting the Rally in half, then making groups of 3 or 4 we headed out to the gravelled car park. Shallow pits were dug out and the girls were shown how to set their fire using the small pieces of dry wood provided, a candle and pieces of inner tube rubber. Within minutes the fires were blazing and the cooking frames were placed over the flames then a billy with (warm) water was carefully settled on top. Once the water was close to boiling one of the older girls carefully lifted it off, added milo, sugar & milk and the girls enjoyed their supper of milo & biscuits. The fires were put out with lots of water, any big bits of wood removed and the gravel raked over the holes. No one would know we had even been there! The groups swapped over and we started all again. Meanwhile the other half of the Rally was learning to tie some knots, erect a small tent out on the front lawn and do a word finder with survivor words. This was a fun, simple night to run and although only touching on the very basics of survival skills, the girls really enjoyed the night and did learn a few new things.
Other Options:
Depending on your facilities and skills you could also make bivvies , do basic first aid, practice bandaging, make a stretcher and adapt your games to make them about survival.Aug182007105.jpg 2007 Fire Prevention picture by miracle04girl

Survivor Obstacle Course:
This could be done in winter using a torch in the dark to make it extra challenging.
Set a course out. Have teams competing around the course. Give a
time at each activity/obstacle. Teams try to earn as many points as possible at each obstacle. Be creative with adapting ideas that may better suit your ages, terrain and equipment available.
Here are some suggested ideas…

  1. Slimy pond -: Make lots of jellies, pour into oven trays and set in a row (about 4 trays). Members have to walk thru it blindfolded. Have the trays out of sight of the lined up team, & they must take their shoes off.
  2. Tunnel crawl -: Have cardboard boxes taped together in a long line. Place some glow in the dark stickers on the sides. Cover both ends with dark cloth. Members crawl through it and out the other end.
  3. Rope rescue -: Inside option: attach rope to a stable object – members pull themselves along the ground using the rope.
Outside option: if you have a tree, use a hanging rope to climb over an object.
  1. Cave exit  -: Have a tyre or tyre tube hanging at about a child’s waist level. They have to worm their way through it. You will need a mat or soft landing underneath it. They can go feet first, or head first. You can hang from a tree branch, or inside if you have a suitable place to suspend one. You might decide to go in pairs – they help each other through the tyre/tube.
  2. Stepping stones – need very low flat rounds of wood. (Must be steady on the ground for safety) One at a time walk along them.
  3. Icy pool – Paddling pool with ice cubes and at least 10 marbles in a milky water. (Add milk powder so they can’t see what is on the bottom) Gather 10 items with toes. Give a point for each marble ‘caught’.
