THE BIG OE

Here is a suggested series of ideas to use for a special Rally Programme. They came from a brainstorming session at the Waikato AGM. Change and adapt them to suit your Rally, Leaders abilities & equipment available.

It could be an OE to ISRAEL if you want to make it an EASTER Special. These ideas will be in italics. See pg 13 -  ‘Stepping Stones to Easter’ for other ideas.

Costume: All members & Leaders can come dressed in clothes from different countries eg. Sari (India) & Lava lava (Fiji) are simple – you just need a length of material. (Bible characters)

nnPassport: Fold a piece of paper/thin card for each member. Pre-print on one side “PASSPORT”. Get them to write their name inside, & their passport number could be their birth-date eg. 02101995.  Provide ‘stamps’ for Leaders at each activity. They need to stamp the passport when a member completes their activity. Stamps could be a ship, plane, car, suitcase (star, donkey, baby, angel)                             n

You could plan your activities either:

  1. a)     in teams – rotate round activities for a set time at each one
  2. b)     have all teams doing the same activity at the same time. Make it competitive & give points at each activity to the winning teams.

Suggested activities:

  1. Photocopy different money/currency. They identify the country it comes from.
  2. Photocopy World maps. Cut into jigsaws. (Remember that each set, if all teams are doing it together, needs to be cut the same). They reassemble the map correctly.
  3. Plane travel – have skateboards. 1 person at a time, rides kneeling on  skate-board, to other end of the room. Push back to next person. OR – provide 1 sheet of A4 paper for each person. The team has to walk over papers, laying 1 at a time in front of team leader, until all the team can walk over them to other end. Last person collects papers up as they come.
  4. Craft: a) Each member makes an origami model (donkey/angel/star). Need to have instructions available, and a Leader will need to teach it. Give the neatest/best one a lolly.

or     b) Choose another simple hobby relating to a country

or     c) paint Japanese words (symbols) on a small canvas or firm card. Have

samples with suitable words for them to choose from.

  1. Lost Luggage: memorise the contents of a suitcase (t-shirt, socks, shorts, jacket, comb, brush, camera, soap, flannel, PJ’s, jandals…). Need about 15-20 items if individuals are memorising them and 30-40 if the team does it together. A Leader holds up each item and then packs it into the suitcase. Shut the lid, give them pencil & paper & get them to record what they can remember. Give 1 point for each correct item. Give an extra point if they get the correct colour eg. purple sock.
  2. Language – teach some words in different languages eg. count 1-10 in 3-4 languages; hello/goodbye/thank-you.
    1. -          write a Bible verse in another language and teach it so they learn to pronounce it correctly. You could find help from a school teacher, ex missionary, immigrant in your church etc. (remember Hebrew is read from right to left)

Supper: Either enjoy this together at the end of the programme – could have a selection of sushi, fried rice, Mexican etc. Or ‘make sushi’ as an activity. (Some Jewish recipes in No1 Rally Cookbook)
