Boot Camp Night
We dressed up as anything to do with the three ‘services’. (army, navy, Airforce)
For our Parade we were very regimented with NO talking on Parade. Leader to use ‘Sergeants’ voice!
Here are some suggestions for “Round Robin’ activities for groups. You could get Leaders to take points and give a small lolly bar/gift to the winning team. Change or adapt to suit what gear you have available.
Assault Course:
Set-up – a net or tarpaulin tied down, a bench seat, some tyres.
Play – one at a time team members crawl under net/tarp, walk along the bench and step through each tyre.
Confidence Course:
Set-up – lay a ladder along the top of 2 church pews.
Play – members crawled along ladder, then crawled along floor between the 2 pews back to their team.
Backpack Races:
Set-up – have 2 packs, one larger than the other. Place a few books etc in each so the weights are varied according to pack size. Have a couple of chairs and maybe 2 tyre/tubes to step through about 5m away. (if outside you might have a longer distance to run).
Play – Divide teams into 2 according to size of members. Lay packs in front of each. 2 at a time put packs on, run to the chairs, climb over them, and through the tyres, back to team.
Target Practice:
Set-up – pump water pistols (have 2), a box with a couple of ‘targets’ set on it. They need to be light enough so that the water from the pistol can topple it if hit directly. Bucket of water for replenishing pistols, large cardboard box.
Play – Have pistols filled with water. Taking turns, pick up water pistol, crawl through box, stand or kneel and aim at targets. We allowed only 1 pump of pistol to try to knock over targets. You need to show each team how to use it before starting.
Team Rescue:
Set-up – 4 or 5 cones set out in line about 1 metre apart.
Play – In 3’s, two members carry the third. Get 2 to cross their hands, other member sits on hands. They carry them down the course, going in & out the cones and careful not to knock any over.
Drill:
Set-up – Just a space for some parade/drill.
Play – Leaders using sergeant majors voice!!.. gets team marching, stopping, turning etc.
We played these activities for about 5 minutes each, with about 2 minutes between to get to next activity and to learn what was required.
M Night
Manawaru Girl’s Rally members love to dress up so we always include a special night every year where they can indulge this passion. We often pick a letter of the alphabet and make that the theme for the night with costumes, games, devotion and supper all following the theme.
This year’s letter was “M” and it’s really easy to have a great night using this type of idea with very little extra work.
The girl’s (and their parents) came up with some great costumes ranging from Michael Jackson, Mums, mummies, Minnie mouse, marshmallows, maps, musicians, man, mechanics, middle Eastern women and many, many more M’s! We photographed the girls as they arrived then had them parade in small groups before the rest of the audience. Prizes were given (m&m’s, minties etc) for a number of different categories followed by some M games. It’s easy to adapt normal games so we had;
- Marshmallow stuff – seeing how many marshmallows could be held in the mouth while saying ‘Manawaru’s marvelous M night’
- m&m relay race using a straw to suck the m&m while transferring it from one saucer to another.
- Marshmallow toss – working in pairs, with each successful toss you take a step away from your partner to make a longer distance to toss the marshmallow.
The devotion talk was based around M words that describe God; marvellous, mighty, miracles, majestic, merciful etc then supper was of course also on the M theme with mousetraps (grilled cheese & marmite on toast) and meringues with cream & fruit (or m&m’s).
So – with very little extra effort this was a marvellously memorable night! Other good letters that we have used in the past are B, or P but just let your imagination run wild. |
