All on One Side

Your whole team starts on one side of a volleyball net, so there is no-one on the other side. The object is to get your whole team to the other side of the net.
Using a balloon as a ball, each player volleys the balloon to another player and then scoots under the net to the other side. The last player to touch the balloon then taps it over the net and scoots under. The receiving players try to keep the balloon in play and repeat the process. This could also be done in teams. Each team has a turn and the time is kept to see who can get their whole team to the other side in the shortest time.

Newspaper Trail
Divide the players into teams, which then line up behind a starting line at one end of the playing area. Give the first player in each team a stack single sheets of newspaper. At the ‘Go’ signal, the first player in each team places one newspaper square on the floor in front of them and steps on to it. They then put another square down and step on to that, and so on, leaving a trail of newspaper behind them. Once the player has reached the end marker, they must reverse their course, only this time picking up each sheet of paper after they have stepped off it. On returning to the starting point, the player must then hand the pile of newspapers to the next player in their team. The winners are the first team to successfully get all their players to the end of the hall and back without having stepped on the floor.
Newspaper Walk
Divide the players into teams, which then line up behind a starting line at one end of the hall. Give each player two pieces of newspaper. At a signal, the first player in each team places one newspaper square on the floor in front of them and steps on to it. They then put the other square down and step on to that. From then on they must pick up the rear piece and place it in front of them and step on to it etc. If you have a smooth floor, make sure that the players do not stand on the paper and slide it along the floor! Any player who steps on the floor must go back and start again. Once they reach the end (they must completely cross the line) the player must either start back in the same manner or pick
Paper Aeroplane Derby

Let everybody come up with their own paper aeroplane, made

out of anything that they want, so long as it is newspaper. Give awards for the best designed aeroplane, the longest flight (and the shortest!), and the plane that stays in the air for the longest time. They can even colour/decorate it if they desire.

Circle Shuffle Races

Leaders can prepare this, or make it part of the team competition.

Equipment: newspapers, (masking or other) tape.

Take a full newspaper per team. Tape sheets together into a long line. Then tape the two ends together to make into one continuous circle. Line each team up inside the newspaper circle, with the team holding the paper above their heads. They stand on the base of the newspaper. On ‘GO’, the teams race to the other end of the room, pushing the paper ahead of them and bringing it up from behind, trying not to rip it. They can also race back again. Winner is the one who is first without ripping the newspaper.

Rattlers

Equipment: 2 sealed tins/cans with pebbles in as ‘rattles’, 2 blindfolds.
To play: Everyone sits in a circle. Choose 2 players and blindfold them. Give them a ‘rattle’ each. One is going to tag the other. To get a fix on each others position, either rattler may shake their rattle at any time, and the other MUST immediately respond by rattling theirs. However, the pursuer is allowed to initiate only 5 shakes to locate their quarry, while the pursued can rattle away as much as they dare. The circle helps keep the contestants inside, plus counting the shakes of the pursuer. You could keep the rest of the children interested by changing the shape form circle to oval to square – keeps the rattlers on tenterhooks too!

Inside out

This is a game for pairs. One set of overcoat, jacket and shirt for each team or pair (if not too big a Rally)!!
One member of each pair puts on the garments inside out and in reverse order eg, overcoat, then jacket, then shirt. Now the pair holds hands, and without breaking hands, attempts to exchange the garments. They should end up in the correct order – shirt, then jacket, then overcoat – on the other person and the right side out.
The fastest pair to exchange is the winner. Or the fastest team, as each pair has a turn.

Fox & squirrel

You will need 3 balls – 2 the same or similar, and one different. The object of the game is for the 2 foxes to catch the one squirrel – by tagging whoever is holding the squirrel ball at the time, with one of the fox balls. Everyone stands in a circle and begins passing the fox balls around as fast as they can. Any player can change direction by passing the ball backwards. The fox balls can only be passed to the player next to you – on either side. But the squirrel can be thrown across the circle as well. If you like a lot of noise in the process, everyone can call out ‘fox’ or ‘squirrel’ as they pass the ball.

Spirals

Have everyone join hands in a circle. Choose a leader. Where they break hands the other person stands still, while the ‘leader’ walks around in circles. The chain of spirals goes round the stationary person, drawing all into a coil. Keep holding hands. Now have the centre person bend down (make a little extra room for this) and crawl out through the forest of legs. The whole group follows again until you are all unwound. You might like to divide into 2 groups for this, and see which group can do it the fastest without breaking hands anywhere.

Barrier to Bucket
  • Place up a barrier (hardboard sheet, 2 poles with blanket draped over etc).
  • Behind the barrier place a bucket (or 2 or 3!).
  • Team takes turns throwing their rock over the barrier and trying to get it to land in the bucket/s.
  • Let them view the placing of the bucket/s before they begin.
Rock & Spoon Race
  • Provide a large serving spoon or wooden spoon on which they place their rock.
  • Walk around  a marker and back.
  • They can use 2 hands to hold spoon as it could be heavy!
  • No points if it drops off; or start with 10 points and take 2 off each time it drops.
Ten Pin Bowling
  • Set up ‘pins’ as per usual.
  • Roll your rock to knock them down. 1 bowl per person. 1 point per pin down.
Accuracy
  • Paint small circles on grass 2-4metres away from line.
  • Throw or roll rock to land in a circle.
Hockey Dribble
  • Place 3 markers in a line not too far apart.

sing a hockey stick, dribble your rock (a large rock could be hard to move!) around markers and back to next person.

Balloon Head

  • You will need enough balloons for a few for each team (in case they pop some).
  • Have teams lined up. Divide into pairs and stand back to back. In turn they race (?) up the hall and back holding a balloon on their shoulders between their heads.
Bursting the Bags
  • You will need at least 1 paper bag each.
  • Place the paper bags on chairs or in a pile in line with each team, but at the other end of the room.
  • On ‘go’ the first member of each team runs to the pile, grabs a paper bag, blows it up and bursts it.
  • Then runs back to tag the next team member.
Shake the Penny
  • Have a large coin for each team. (pennies or 50c pieces are a good size)
  • One at a time, they run to end of hall, put the coin down their neck inside their clothes, and shake themselves until the coin drops to the floor.
  • They pick it up and race back to give to the next person.
Passing the Coins
  • Two large sized coins are needed.
  • Have two teams lined up facing each other. (If you have a large Rally, then make 4 or 6 teams).
  • Players have arms outstretched and hands flat with palms facing the floor. Place a coin on the back of the hand of each team leader.
  • On ‘go’ the players slide the coin from the back of one hand to the other, then on to the back of the next players hand, and so on up the line.
  • Should the coin fall it can either go back to the beginning again, or a Leader can put it back on the hand of the one passing it.
Hop and Kick Relay
  • You will need chalk, and a plate or lid per team.
  • In front of each team you will need to draw a circle, then another one about 3 metres further. Place an old plate or lid into the first circles.
  • Each player in turn has to hop into the first circle, and keep hopping as they kick the plate/tin along and into the 2nd circle.
  • Then they hop back to the next person in the team who hops to the 2nd circle and kicks it (while still hopping) back to the first circle and so on.

Pip, Squeek & Wilbur

Equipment: Bean bags
Arrange children in groups of three. One person in each group is Pip, one is Squeek, and one is Wilbur. These groups are then arranged in one big circle. Place the beanbags on the floor in the centre of the circle. The Leader calls out one of the three names; they then run around the outside of the circle until they get back to their group. Meanwhile the other two members of the group form an archway with their hands so that when their team member comes around they can then run under the archway and try to grab one of the beanbags on the floor. There should be enough beanbags for all bar two groups. If the runner gets a beanbag they score a point. Continue by calling another name… The group with the most points at the end is the winner. If you have a large group, you may have 4 less beanbags than groups.

Backlash

Equipment: blankets & water-balloons.
All players should be standing around the blanket holding an edge (in teams if a larger Rally with a blanket for each team). The Leader of the game will launch a water-balloon (by catapult or throwing) into the air near the team. The object of the game is to move as a team to catch the water-balloons in the blanket. Might be a good summer game!!

Fool your family

Equipment: Prepare one slip of paper for every player. Papers should be in groups of five, and each group represents a family. Eg. the Smiths, So the first paper would have Mr Smith written on it, the second Mrs Smith, the third Brother Smith and so on.  Each family would have a different last name, but the same characters – ie. Mr, Mrs, Brother, Sister, Baby.
Each player is given a slip of paper and they must walk around trading papers with everyone else in the room.  They should be trying to make as many exchanges as possible, and they should not be looking at which papers they are receiving. The Leader then calls out “Find your Family”. The players must find the other members in their family, and then sit on the floor in order – Dad, Mum, Brother, Sister, Baby. The first family correctly in line gets points for their teams or a lolly, or you can eliminate the last family. You can add another dimension by saying “find your family without talking”, or “hop while you find your family”.
